Our inaugural safety awards ceremony at the Copthorne Hotel, Manchester was a huge success! The event, held on Friday 22 April was attended by over 100 guests. Awards were presented to winners of five separate categories by our Guest of Honour, Andy Gay, HSE’s Head of Construction Operations.
Our first award, Personality of the Year, went to Danny Duignan of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Danny has carved a very successful career in health and safety in spite of a late identification of dyslexia. Danny has used his personal experiences to teach and motivate others and is a true inspiration to others around him.
The evening’s second award, for the outstanding Non-Safety Professional went to Sandra Bland, a cleaning Supervisor with Cruden Construction. The awards delegates heard how Sandra often goes above and beyond in her quest to improve health and safety in her working environment and tackles health and safety issues head-on.
The Best Innovation prize, our third of the evening, went to the very deserving Leach Structural Steelwork. Our judging panel, mindful of the fact that around 2000 workers are injured in falls from vehicles each year, was particularly impressed with the simplicity of their vehicle fall protection system and the huge safety benefits it offers.
Our fourth award, for the Outstanding Organisation went to Redrow Homes in recognition of their commitment to provide defibrillators at over 100 of their operational sites. Not only do these devices provide potentially life-saving equipment to construction workers, they are also available for use in the communities in which the sites are located.
Our fifth and final award for Lifetime Achievement went to the very deserving Jason Anker. Jason has dedicated his life to spreading the safety message after he suffered a life-changing fall from height in 1993. Those that have attended one of Jason’s talks will testify to the huge impact his story has on all who hear it.
The Committee would like to congratulate all of our winners and thank all of those that took the time to enter. The quality of entries was nothing short of outstanding and we look forward to hearing more inspiring stories at our 2017 awards!
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!
